This man, a professor named Swapan from Calcutta, slept on the bunk opposite me on the sleeper train heading toward Darjeeling. Before retiring for the night, Swapan sat with me and taught me Bengali as our train ascended into the foothills of the Himalayas. When I awoke the next morning, he was reading peacefully with the morning sun pouring over him. It was a beautiful scene and the perfect way to begin my adventure in West Bengal.
